The Fourth Ward Afro-Klezmer Ensemble, nine pieces strong, had its first gig tonight. There was a packed house (!) at Eyedrum. It's going to take me a while to come down. The music was sloppy in spots, but at times transcendent. I've played so many gigs in my life - good, bad, passable; sometimes for the music and sometimes for the money. But when you're playing music that lifts you and takes you to another place, there's nothing like it. I'm extremely lucky to be standing between Ben Davis and Bill Nittler as the weakest link in the best saxophone section in Atlanta.
